I’ve been really excited to work with Pork Pie Hatters over the last few months. I’ve made hat stands, hat blocks, and some fun laser cut experiments for them and it’s been sincerely fascinating to find ways to blend their classic hand crafting tools and techniques with the kind of digital fabrication that can bring mass production polish to boutique small run items.

Laser Cut Hat Stands
I’ve been designing things for Pork Pie Hatters for a year, now. This has included their site, a custom door, some signage, an extra large stamp, a series of hats, and a host of other things. Recently, we’ve been talking about displays, interior decoration, and finding ways to maximize the hats on display while keeping a lid on the clutter. The main problem with selling anything in Manhattan is finding a place to put any stock that isn’t out on the shelves, and the problem with buying anything in Manhattan is sorting it into your microscopic apartment. So, I came up with some flat pack hat stands.
Continue readingFoldy Zoetrope
I made little foldy zoetropes to send folks for the holidays. Now that they’re all sent out and people have had a chance to enjoy them, I figured I could reveal the design without anybody feeling less special. I should release the design and talk about the process behind making them. I should have time for that soon. In the meantime, check out the construction tutorial video after the fold.

Yes, I know. All of my projects involve laser cutting of some flavor or another these days. I’m hopelessly addicted to cutting things with beams of light. Given that I’m a huge nerd and am prone to youtube celebrity fandom, I made some little keychains for my favorite “guys making funny voices while playing videogames” show: Game Grumps.

One of the deep and subtle magics of fabrication is how many ways you can get approximately the same result with different procedures. It’s a bit like cooking, where the choice of whether to bake or broil, pan fry or deep fry, can have a profound effect or make little difference at all depending on what goes in and the desired result. Having a laser on hand means I can fiddle with my methods and iterate a bunch of different solutions each with minor tweaks until I get the result I was searching for. Also, with the coming laser singularity (when lasers become more common than printers), more materials and toys are available for added lazing satisfaction.

Howdy, y’all. Come out and see the Anywhere Organ in action at this year’s World Maker Faire. I’m going to be setting up a keyboard for people to play with, a laptop to run some sweet MIDI tunes, and there might even be some special musical guests. I’ve also got a Kickstarter going to raise funds for a bigger, better, more amazing version. Check it out at http://kck.st/anywhereorgan
You can see a sweet video of the organ in action after the jump.

Look at this. The folks from Dangerous Prototypes are totally rolling with the Hackerspace Passport train. It’s beautiful watching the stamp design progress on their forum. Their design features a check box for the continent where the visa was applied and a line for the location and notary’s signature.

I just finished some prototypes for an item that will soon be making a showing in the store. If you like the idea of wearing a scene depicting a kraken dragging a galleon down to the crushing deep on your eyelashes you might want to keep an eye out for updates.
Continue readingNewness on Sleek and Destroy
I’ve put a series of brand new things up on the Sleek and Destroy Etsy page. I’ve got a series of T-Rex and human skull puzzles, some hyper gothic Petrine Cross earrings, and some chunky retro Paint Drip earrings. Everything’s black and white, laser cut, and gorgeous.
